May 1970
Mill Basin, Brooklyn
Picture it: Tall, gawky, hearing impaired 13 year old girl in the back of the school surrounded by teen age girls taunting and shoving….
I was terrified.
Fast forward, four decades later;
No one talks about adult bullying;
it is passive:aggressive
it is insidious
it is there
Sure, there are rules and procedures, but the English language is amazing. All you need for bullying to happen is someone drunk on power and a keen ability to manipulate language.
No one expects the medical profession to stoop that low. However, medical professionals are human, and power is addictive.
I tried to fight it, I tried to live with it, let me tell you the only way to survive it, is to change your environment.
As Judy Sheindlin said,” Never let anyone or anything define your value or limit your dream.”
I am writing this to encourage you that if you feel trapped, belittled, and confined professionally, there is an easier option. Just go….
You will be happier.
You will get on with your life.
I did.
